Whoopi Goldberg explains why her marriages failed

Whoopi Goldberg – born Caryn Elaine Johnson – was born on November 13, 1955, in New York. Their father left them so Whoopi and her brother were raised by their mom who had to do many jobs to make ends meet.

At a young age, Whoopi wasn’t so good in school as she had a hard time keeping up, but little did she know she had dyslexia.

She told Ebony Magazine in 1991, “You don’t want to be retarded all your life. I was retarded for a good part of mine, according to all the paperwork, and I just couldn’t handle it.”

She was often called dumb by her peers, but her mom saw her in another light; she always encouraged her, telling her she can be anything she wants.

“I knew I wasn’t stupid, and I knew I wasn’t dumb. My mother told me that,” she said in 1994.

Whoopi grew up to love comedy and wanted to pursue a career in it, but things weren’t so easy as she got a job as a mortuary beautician to support herself.

Whoopi Goldberg said on Oprah’s Master Class, “I did hair and makeup on dead people. There was an ad in the paper! And I’m a licensed beauticianu as well because I went to beauty school.”

“It’s a rough gig,” she added. “You have to be a certain kind of person. And you have to love people to make them worthy of a great send-off.”

She went on to pursue a career in standup còmedy and took the name, Whoopi Goldberg and it wasn’t long before people started talking about it and the rest is history.

Whoopi Goldberg got married for the first to Alvin Martin in 1973 at the age of 18. After her marriage to Alvin ended in 1979 she got married twice again to cinematographer David Claessen between 1986 and 1988, and Lyle Trachtenberg between 1994 and 1995. None of her marriages worked and seems like she has it all figured it and the reason none of them worked.

She told the New York Times, “Look, people expect you to have a boyfriend. They expect you to get married. So I kept trying to do that, but I didn’t want to share information with somebody else. I didn’t want anybody to ask me why I was doing what I was doing or to have to make the other person feel better.

But if you’re in a relationship, you have to do those things, and it took me a while to figure out that I didn’t want to,” she added.

She revealed she’s not very good with relationships and the only time she was ever in love is with a man with who she didn’t disclose his identity.

She said she isn’t focusing on relationships or marriage at the moment. She just wants to be happy and stay alive with her daughter Alexander who she had with Alvin Martin.
