The final “sincere wish” of Queen Elizabeth signals a major change in the monarchy

At the age of 96, Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She ruled for an astounding 70 years, making her the UK’s longest-reigning queen.

According to accounts, she passed away quietly on Thursday at her Scottish estate while surrounded by her family.

Camilla became the Duchess of Cornwall in 2005 after marrying the prince at the time. She would also be referred to as “Princess Consort” by the palace after Charles assumed the throne.

But the Queen’s declaration earlier this year signalled a change in the monarchy’s attitude toward Camilla and her official title.

When Charles is sworn in as the new King, Camilla should be addressed as Queen Consort, according to Her Majesty’s final “sincere wish.”

I know you will support my son Charles and his wife Camilla in the same way that you have supported me when the time comes, and it is my honest hope that Camilla will be known as Queen Consort at that point as she continues her own devoted service, said Queen Elizabeth.

The love of Queen Elizabeth’s life, Prince Philip, had already been introduced to her by that time. They are reported to have first crossed paths at the nuptials of The Duke of Kent, Princess Elizabeth’s uncle, and Princess Marina of Greece, a cousin of Prince Philip.

The pair announced their engagement in July of 1947. The pair wed in Westminster Abbey on November 20 of the same year.

He is not someone who readily accepts compliments. He has, quite simply, been my pillar of support throughout the years, and I, as well as his entire family, as well as this and many other countries, owe him a debt that is far more than he would ever claim or that we will ever be able to fully comprehend, Queen Elizabeth said at the event.
