‘It has that added edge’: Bridgerton is ‘ALREADY tipped for a Second Series After the VERY Racy Period Drama Proved to be a hit on Netflix’

It’s been praised for it’s racy scenes and extravagant scenery since being released on Netflix on Christmas Day.

And period drama Bridgerton has now been tipped to become the next Downton Abbey after it enjoyed a successful launch on the streaming site.

The show, which is based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling novels, follows the romance between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) however there are seven more books following other siblings in the powerful family.

A TV insider told The Sun: ‘With so much material to work with there’s every chance it could develop into multiple series.

‘And it’s fair to say it has an added edge that Downton didn’t have.’

He said: ‘There are eight Bridgerton siblings [and] there are eight Bridgerton books. So in success I would love to be able to explore love stories and romances for all the Bridgerton brothers and sisters, of course.’

Downton Abbey successfully ran for six series, with beloved characters such as Mr Carson and Lady Mary, and was also turned into a feature length film in 2019.

It comes after Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page joked that the elaborate dance scenes were like ‘Regency Tinder’.

The actor, 30, who plays Simon the Duke of Hastings, appeared via video link from LA on BBC Breakfast on Monday where he reflected on the joy of filming the hit.

Speaking about the dance scenes, Regé-Jean said: ‘The dances are the heart of the piece, there’s joy in the dances.

‘It’s a bit like regency Tinder! There’s some aggressive swiping left going on but it’s also the only place [the glamorous balls] where people are allowed to be honest with each other, even though they’re in the full view of society.’

When asked to describe Bridgerton, Regé-Jean joked that it’s like ‘Downton Abbey’s wayward sibling, a bit more scandalous.’

He continued: ‘The idea was to do something fresh and exciting, fun, fast, funny and more glamorous than has been done before in the period genre.
